Top 5 Landscaping Apps

The rainy season is a great time to begin dreaming and planning what you want to do in your yard next year. If you want to design your dream yard, you’re going to need a little help. You better believe it, there’s an app for that. We review the top 5 apps that will inspire you and keep your project on track.

iScapeApp
Do you want to know how certain features will look BEFORE you dig up your yard? iScape is a great app for redesigning your yard whether you’re a do it yourselfer or planning to hire a landscape contractor.

For example, if you ever wanted to see what mulch would look like in a certain area of your yard, you can do that. Just take a picture of your yard, circle an area and add photos from the iScape image database to that area.

iScape makes it very easy to communicate your vision to your landscape contractor or even your landscape supplier. You can use it to play around with different ideas.

iScape is available for iPhone and Android. The paid version is $9.99. There is also a version called Hardscape which allows you to add retaining walls, paver patios and fences. Hardscape is $4.99.

Allan Block for Residential Retaining Walls and for Courtyard Patio Walls
Allan Block offers two estimating tools that will allow you to estimate how much material you need for your retaining wall or patio project.
With the Residential Retaining Wall Estimating App, all you have to do is enter the length and height of your retaining wall, answer a few questions about your yard layout and you’ll get a basic estimate of how many blocks you’ll need

The app for Courtyard Patio Walls is virtually the same, but this allows you to estimate courtyard patio walls. What’s nice about this app is that you can add corner posts and wall endings. Both apps give you the opportunity to get a more detailed estimate by entering your zip code and email address.

Both apps are a bit cumbersome to use on the iPhone, so if you have a tablet device, use that to use this app. The apps are somewhat intuitive to use at first. Fortunately, there are videos that help you get acquainted with the apps.
Both apps are free and available for iOS and Android devices.

Sprout It
Sponsored by the folks that bring you Miracle-Gro, Sprout It is a guide geared towards beginner gardeners. The app has information for about 60 plants and gives advice on the best time to grow them based on your location.

It’s pretty easy to use. Pick the plants you want to plant. The app also gives basic planting information – sun requirements, seed spacing and seed depth. Sprout It also syncs with your calendar, so you can be sure that you remember what needs to be planted when.
Sprout It is free for iOS devices.
